International Recruitment

At Build Measure Learn we accept international applicants that have an interest in relocating to Sweden.

Build Measure Learn does sponsor work visas for candidates that require it. The process for international candidates is long and that is because it is dependent on a decision from the Swedish migration authority (Migrationsverket) regarding approval of work permit (approx. 6 months, however this can vary).

Note that we can only hire candidates that are outside of the EU when we cannot find a qualified candidate within the EU, which makes the qualifications strict and essentially it means that we do not hire junior candidates (often a minimum of 5+ years relevant experience is required).

Also please be informed that our hiring process from within Sweden & EU looks slightly different.

About the process....

What do we look for in candidates?

Several characteristics that we look for in candidates:

  • Has made contributions to previous employers or projects that have been important for the business or product

  • An authority in their area, tech and tools. That you know your stuff and can easily explain it and simplify it for others.

  • Interested in the problem being solved (not just the solution)

  • Can rapidly take an idea from concept to working code to user adoption

  • Great communication in English

  • We like candidates that have been a co-founder and/or have freelancer experience

We're happy for our candidates to share links that demonstrate the stuff above:

  • Videos on youtube or elsewhere

  • Online courses which you have taught

  • Stack-overflow accounts

  • Articles which you have written (medium articles, for example)

  • Quora accounts

  • Github

Steps & Timeline

This is how our process looks:

  • We reach out to the candidate via LinkedIn or email to setup a call.

  • Initial call or video-call.

  • Self-assessment form (should take 30 minutes or less to fill out)

  • Formal Interview (within 7-14 days after first call)

    • The formal interview will be a technical interview where you will be asked to present a project that you have worked on previously and there will be discussion.

  • References

    • We will contact 2-3 people that you have worked for / with in previous projects and/or employments.

  • Offer of Employment (within 7-14 days after Formal Interview)

    • If selected we will give you an offer of employment for you to sign. The offer of employment is required by the Swedish migration authority in the work permit application.

  • Visa application at Migrationsverket (Swedish migration authority)

    • Build Measure Learn starts this process, and shortly after you will be contacted by Migrationsverket to submit additional details including pictures of your current passport that should have an expiration date that is over 2 years away. You are not permitted by Migrationsverket to come into Sweden and begin work while your visa application is being processed.

  • Decision by Migrationsverket (4-6 months)

  • Provide resignation at current employer & begin to be available for interviews with Swedish clients. This can happen now after the decision from Migrationsverket since the uncertainty about lead-time has been drastically reduced.

  • Provide your passport and biometric info to Swedish embassy in your home country.

  • Pick up your passport and Swedish visa from Swedish embassy in your home country (2 weeks)

  • Decide on first-day-of-work in Sweden - ideally after an assignment with client has been agreed upon

  • Travel to Sweden - and start work

Starting to work earlier and remotely?

If you are interested, It may be possible to start work remotely (from your home country) while waiting for the visa process to be completed. This would be dependent on and require:

  • That Build Measure Learn finds a client that would be OK with a remote setup and is OK to work with a consultant based in your home country. There is no guarantee that we would be able to make this happen.

  • You would not be employed by Build Measure Learn during this time period, but rather would work as a contractor via your own company registered in your home country. So during this time period instead of receiving a salary from Build Measure Learn, you would send an invoice to Build Measure Learn.

Work remote from home country and not relocating?

At this time we are not looking at applicants that do not have an intent to relocate. This option may become available in the future.

Relocation costs & assistance

Build Measure Learn provides some assistance with relocation.

We provide:

  • One-way airline ticket to Sweden including 2 pieces of checked luggage. Additional baggage/items and family members will need to be paid for by the candidate.

  • Housing assistance that we book (airbnb for example) for the first couple of weeks in Sweden. This will allow you to look for a more permanent place to live and we would suggest that you look for a more permanent place to live even prior to arriving in Sweden.

  • Visa application costs for the candidate. Fees for family members / dependants will need to be paid by you.

The costs above will be paid for by Build Measure Learn, however, if the employment ends before 1 full year, then the costs will be repaid to Build Measure Learn (and come out of the final pay-check).
